The next morning Ford walked the quarter mile down to the main road. The intermittent sunshine yesterday and this morning had started a thaw. He could see patches of the driveway and when he reached the road it had been cleared.

They’d be able to make it into town today to replenish supplies. And the way to San Diego had been opened up.

“I don’t know how much longer I’ll be,” he said into his cell in answer to his older brother’s question. “My commander gave me thirty days leave to handle the situation. Now the snow has stopped, I’ll be able to get on the road once we resolve the custody issue.”

“What’s the hold up there? I thought you said she wasn’t interested in taking on the twins.”

“The picture Crystal painted of her sister was off. Way off. She’s already bonded with the kids and she’s refusing to sign off on custody.”

“So if she’s willing and able to take on the task, why don’t you let her?”

“Tony made them my responsibility. I can’t do my duty by them if they’re in Montana and I’m in California.”

“I know you don’t want to hear it, but you can’t do it by jet setting all over the world, either. Maybe they’d be better off in Montana.”

“I’m not exactly hopping the globe on pleasure trips. It’s my job. And you were singing a different song about responsibility when you took Gabe from Samantha. She was willing and able and you still went after custody.”

“Different scenario. Gabe is my son. The twins are not your family.”

“They are now. I owe Tony in ways I can’t define. I can no more deny his request than I could if something happened to you and Samantha and you left your boys in my care.”

“I’ve always admired your loyalty, little bro. You know we’ll support you any way we can.”

“Yeah, I know. That’s what Tony was counting on.” After promising to keep his brother posted, Ford disconnected the call.

He sighed, his breath crystallizing in the air. He and Rachel were long overdue for a conversation on custody. Today he’d get her to sign the papers and tomorrow he and the twins would be on the road.

No more excuses.

As he approached the house he heard a ringing. Sounded like phone service had been restored.

He opened the front door to see Rachel waving her arms in the air and shimmying her hips. A tantalizing strip of creamy flesh showed between her low-cut black jeans and the turquoise sweater that matched her eyes. She danced around the kitchen; making the twins who were strapped into their high chairs, giggle.

“Was that the phone I heard?” he asked.

She whipped around at the sound of his voice and he saw the smile lighting up her face.

“Yes, it was.” She shimmied toward him, threw herself into his arms. “The phones are working.”

“That is good news. And if you like that…” He waltzed her around the table, twirled her around once and dropped her into a dip. “You’ll want to do a jig when you hear the road is clear.
